Antiochian Exegesis The name of Antioch is connected, apart from a specific exegesis of the Holy Scriptures, to a
different Christological approach than the Alexandrian one, as well as to its own liturgical
tradition. The Alexandrian Exegesis was accused of too much emphasis on spiritual interpretation
and too much allegory as system of biblical interpretation, while the “antiohians” emphasized
the historical aspect of the biblical text. The beginning of Antiochian exegesis was triggered
by a rejection of an exaggerated allegory practiced by Origen and his descendants as a means of
interpreting Holy Scripture. MIRCEA BASARAB |
