Simplicity and clarity of language in the work of Nicolae Colan

ALEXANDRU SURDU, Simplicity and clarity of language in the work of Nicolae Colan
Besides a great preacher of the Orthodox faith, Metropolitan Nicolae Colan was a great promoter
of the Romanian language. According to the great hierarch there is an inextricable link between the
Orthodox faith, the national identity and Romanian language. Faithful to this view, he was closely
concerned with the study of language, in all his writings he sought to use Romanian words, avoiding
neologisms (especially in his pastoral letters), considering that they “speckled” the language
and distorted deep meanings. As man of letters, Nicolae Colan kept very dear the correct use of the
national language, sometimes he even taught his faithful, be they laymen or priests. And the author
provides examples.
