Hierotypos - Greek perspective and Russian tradition in the theology of icon

Valentin Cioveie, Hierotypos - Greek perspective and Russian tradition in the theology of icon
The essay examines the book Hierotypos. The theology of the icon by the Church Fathers (Byzantine Publishing house, without year) of Georgios Kordis, Greek iconographer and teacher and how it presents, step by step, an insight into the relationship between classical texts iconophiles and the painting technique. The whole argument of the paper is an attempt to develop a theology of the icon - based on the Holy Fathers (especially St. Patriarch Photios) through a distancing from what is believed to be Russian theology of the icon (especially L. Uspensky). The essay will show you step by step that argumentation is not always solid, that it lacks a deeper understanding of the grounds  of the Russian tradition position. We propose a series of distinctions that are missing in prof. Kordis’s work and, finally, an awareness of orthodox subtraditions against its monolithic visions.

Keywords: theology of the icon, Georgios Kordis, Russian tradition, Greek tradition
