The Message of to the Salvation Army (December 6, 2018)
This social message of Patriarch Bartholomew was addressed in Seoul, South Korea, at a meeting
of the Salvation Army Foundation. Today we are witnessing an exponential increase in the social
problem of poverty and consequently of a constant and dangerous extension of the gap between the
rich and the poor. It is well-known that global poverty cannot be solved by political or social
systems. This can only be solved by the action on the roots that continually feed it - human
greed and the avid desire to have greater worldly pleasures. Greed, luxury, opulence and avarice
are truly incompatible with the teachings of Christ. Poverty would not exist in our world if we
follow the teachings of Christ and His Church.
