Paul Gherasim in the shadow of the Dome of Light
The present essay was exposed at the colloquium “Dome of Light - Octagon, from Lainici Monastery” (8-10 August 2019). The creation of the world begins with the creation of light. But, following the Divine Revelation, we sense the existence of a light even before the Creation, a divine light. The Light is one of the names of Christ. But whether light is created or not, it is beautiful and indestructibly connected to beauty. Thinking of any light, we instantly connect it with sight, whatever sight it may be, physical or spiritual. The sight of the divine light is ultimately a state of supreme spiritualization of the one who sees. And physical light can sometimes be viewed as an image of spiritual Light. Theology speaks a lot about light in terms of knowledge. Paul Gherasim brings into two-dimensional what is spatial. It is, as a matter of fact, the general way of expression for the good painting. Ultimately, the dome becomes a surface, but one in a space with many dimensions, physical, metaphysical or spiritual.
