The life of St. Isaac the Syrian and the sources of his thinking

Georgian Păunoiu, The life of St. Isaac the Syrian and the sources of his thinking

The study presents a few data on the life of St. Isaac the Syrian and analyzes the sources of his thinking. According to the experts, his two major sources – of inspiration on the one hand, and of preserving thinking in the truth on the other hand – are the Scriptures and the writings of the great Fathers of the Church. In his work can be seen influences from Evagrius of Pontus, Theodore of Mopsuestia († 428), John of Apamea (Vth century), Basil the Great, Mark the Ascetic and Dionysius, not to mention the “giants of the desert”, the great fathers of Egypt. Isaac becomes their new voice, full of humility and grace. Isaac’s recognition as a great spiritual father grows especially after his death, as his writings will be translated and spread into the Christian world.
