The scientific study of theology as a prerequisite for spiritual knowledge

In patristic thought, theology is a holistic science that takes into account both the revealed truth of God and his personal proximity. In modern times, theology became a scientific field in humanistic sciences category. In this context, the question that we raise in this study can be expressed as follows: how to study theology to reflect the rules generally recognized as scientific, but at the same time not losing its ascetic spiritual character? To answer this question, we try to define theological knowledge and the role of the theologian, and therefore, we will identify the major differences between pure scientific knowledge and spiritual knowledge. And in the second part we refer to the study of Spiritual Theology within the academic study of theology.

Keywords: rational knowledge, spiritual knowledge, spiritual theology, spiritual experience.
